Sermon For 2025-Jan-05

Texts: Sermon Only
Jeremiah 31:7-14
Psalm 147:12-20
Ephesians 1:3-14
John 1:1-18

But God knows that we are not creatures of spirit like Himself, but instead, we are creatures of flesh and blood. And so, God sent his Son IN flesh and blood, so that his disciples could see him and hear him, and provide a witness to his actions – especially his death and his resurrection. God sent his Son, a chip off the old block, so that Jesus could make God known and display to the world what God's character is really like – his compassion, his sacrifice, his willingness to forgive, and his desire that we care for each other as he cares for us. God wants us to know him well enough to be able to trust him completely, with everything we are and have and do.

So what phrase do WE use when we want people to trust US – people who have already heard their share of lies and deceptions? What does the action hero say to the people he wants to protect, so that they count on him? What does the leading man say when he is ready to be with the leading lady forever? What words do we say when we are laying everything on the line? We say, “I give you my word.” In Jesus, God says to US, “you are my beloved children, I forgive you, I am gathering up to myself all things and all people, I have an inheritance to give you...AND...I give you my Word...my Word made flesh.”

Gracious God, we thank you for revealing yourself to us through the flesh and blood of your Son Jesus on the cross. Keep our faith strong, in Jesus name, amen.
