There is something more effective at spreading the gospel of Christ than providing for people's physical needs, and that's spreading the gospel of Christ. Paul tells Timothy where to give attention: the public reading of scripture, exhorting, and teaching. This is where Timothy will save both himself and his hearers. This is what makes the church different from a welfare agency, the focus on people's spiritual needs. Yes, Jesus fed 5000 people lunch on a couple of occasions, but this was done as a MIRACLE, to draw attention to his teachings and build his credibility as God's Son. When people came back for ANOTHER free lunch, Jesus called them out for missing the point. Yes, Jesus warned us that if we left hungry one of the least of those who are members of his family, we will have done it to Jesus. But what if the stranger in the street has made it painfully obvious he has no intention of being a member of Jesus' family? It is more important, and more valuable, to introduce people to the Jesus who can save them for eternity.
As family members of Jesus, we share a level of care for each other that at times may involve physically assisting each other. Provision of meals when loved ones are lost, is just one example that comes to mind! But unlike the situation of people taking advantage of Christian charity, these forms of assistance are usually mutual. They build up our relationships. They show our devotion to good works. And because they are done in Jesus' name, they point to our Saviour, and to the life of the resurrection we share with him.
Gracious God, keep us eager to help our family members, and the members of our faith family. Help us give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching your gospel, in Jesus' name....
